Unfortunately, not every concrete contractor is able to mix, pour, apply and finish concrete correctly. Even though concrete is basically made up of only 3 ingredients (water, aggregate, cement), the wide variety of applications means that it takes a good understanding of the properties involved and the experience to produce high quality concrete for the application you want.

We always check that the concrete is able to handle heavy loads by making sure we have the right technical concrete mix. We carefully oversee each project for surface preparation, making sure we have a suitably prepared concrete base for a solid foundation.

When applying concrete we make sure that the levels are accurate to get a smooth even finish. We like to use troweling or a gentle broom to give it a great result. For example our concrete driveways are nicely edged and decorated both with a broom and a concrete edging tool.

Correct water management is also an important consideration when pouring the concrete as we need water to fall in the correct places to avoid ponding.

Finally, the process of finishing concrete is a crucial one. Timing is all important and understanding the condition of the concrete. If it is too wet or too dry, the slab will be weak, damaged or unattractive. 

The last process at the finishing stage of concrete is an application of a white epoxy curing agent. It slows the curing process which enables its strength, durability, and retains its moisture contents for a good duration period. It cures at a slower rate. Once you wait 12-24 hours, you then apply with a water hose a slow even mist of water onto the concrete about 3 times a day for about 5 mins for 3 days day after the pour. This process gives the concrete the right amount of time to harden developing a sufficient curing stage, allowing it to breath, expel and retain air and heat and contain its moisture density upon graduating to its full development process of a concrete compound to fully cure.

We take different approaches to concreting indoor and outdoor areas.

For example, outdoor concrete pavers are what we refer to as permeable pavements as we need to allow water to pass through. On the other hand, for indoor floors and bathrooms we aim for high moisture absorption to make the surfaces slip resistant.

For outdoor areas where it gets particularly hot, we may use liquid limestone as an ideal concrete substitute to keep that area cool.

To get the best results, use a professional concrete contractor who has experience in the type of concrete job you are looking for. Make sure they understand the specific requirements needed to get good quality finished product.

Ask them about their methods to ensure a high level result and the type of work they have done in similar concrete areas. Most importantly, try to find a concrete contractor who can show examples of great work they have done as well as a record of projects completed on time; as this can save you money on extra labour costs.

What types of home driveways are available and which is best?

When the time comes to replace old concrete driveways or getting a new one, the most common question asked is whether it should be made from concrete, pavers or asphalt.

To summarise, each driveway material has their own merits and disadvantages. If you are looking for the most ideal solution however, concrete driveways are superior in quality as they will last the longest (up to 50 years or more) and best elevates the appearance of your property. Whilst pavers can be attractive, over time the gaps can lead to growth of weeds and mildew. Likewise Asphalt is cost effective in the short term but often needs resealing for cracks every 3-5 years. Asphalt is also not very suitable for warmer climates due to it being softer than concrete and more prone to getting cracks especially if exposed to heavy vehicles.

Our recommendation is always about suitability to your situation but living in Sydney with the warmer climates and the durability makes having a concrete driveway the best long term option.

Should I be replacing or restoring an existing concrete driveway?

The decision whether to replace or restore a concrete driveway is largely one based on the structural integrity of the existing concrete. If their are only chips and hairline cracks, a resurfacing project is probably suitable but if there are large cracks indicating serious issues or if the concrete has worn out to a thin layer (2 inches or less) then its definitely worth looking at new concrete slabs. 

Concrete resurfacing is when a concrete coat is applied to your existing concrete driveway to make it look like new concrete. The process of resurfacing a driveway involves removing any hindrances such as rotten concrete and filling in any active cracks. 

The benefit of driveway resurfacing is that in most cases, it will last about 10 years and you also have the option of changing its appearance. For instance, a decorative coating can transform your plain concrete into a stamped concrete driveway. We have resurfaced concrete to become coloured driveways as well coloured concrete pathways.

How much do concrete driveways cost?

Typically the cost of a concrete driveway (based on a concrete slab) will cost $55-85 a square metre.

The beauty about concrete is that you can create many different concrete driveway designs. Some of the options include coloured concrete, stamped concrete, stencilled concrete, etching and exposed aggregate driveways. The more customisability required will add to the pricing but will also add to the value and aesthetics of the driveway.

How much work is required to maintain a concrete driveway?

When concrete driveways are installed by a professional concreter, then the driveway becomes very low maintenance. Most of the time, a good hose down is the main requirement to keep it clean however if there are petrol spills and oil build up over time, a degreaser is an option to remove those stains.
